Hydrographic Survey and Sediment Mapping Analysis Project from Foster Lake Management

Foster Lake Management and The Mapping Network recently completed a mapping project for a home owners association in North Carolina.  A total of six bodies of water ranging from 0.8 acres to 80 acres were surveyed.  The purpose for the mapping project was to obtain existing sediment volumes so dredging budget numbers could be calculated for a reserve study. Foster Lake Management has been managing these lakes and ponds for over 20 years. They have advised the HOA Board of Directors that they need to recognize that sedimentation is occurring and budget for expected dredging in the future as part of their Reserve Study. Johnny Foster, owner of Foster Lake and Pond Management says “by mapping the entire lakes and collecting sediment depths at areas where sedimentation is occurring we know the existing sediment volumes and it can serve as a baseline for future studies to determine the rate of sedimentation. Several dredging contractors, including us will be asked to provide cost estimates. Since we will all be bidding on the same volume of material removed from known deposits, the Board will be comparing apples to apples in the competitive bids.”

The information will allow the proactive Board of Directors to prepare a reasonable budget now and anticipate future needs over time. “Our company takes pride in being an integrated lake and pond management company that provides the full range of services and products needed by lake, pond and stormwater device owners. We see our partnership with The Mapping Network furthering our commitment to be the most cost effective lake management company in North Carolina and surrounding areas” says Foster.

The bottom line – This powerful information allows for smart management and planning decisions and will serve as a baseline for future projects.  A great value!

This map shows water depth contour lines for all six bodies of water.  These detailed lake maps will be used for future lake management planning and as fishing maps for the community.

Foster Lake Management surveyed the coves to calculate sediment volume.  Each cove had a total sediment volume along with sediment thickness noted on the map.  The community is able to easily locate sediment problem areas and take appropriate measures to manage these areas.
